Esaote Open MRI (0.25T):
The Esaote S-Scan Open is a dedicated, open-bore magnetic resonance imaging system featuring a 0.25T permanent magnet. Designed primarily for musculoskeletal (MSK) and spine imaging, it provides a highly comfortable, claustrophobia-free experience. Like other standard structural MRIs, the vast majority of its core evaluations can be performed without injected contrast.
- MRI of the Knee: Highly effective for checking meniscus tears, ACL/PCL injuries, and cartilage damage.
- MRI of the Shoulder: Used to evaluate rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and impingement syndromes.
- MRI of the Hand, Wrist, and Elbow: Assesses ligaments, tendons, joint fluid, occult (hidden) fractures, and conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome.

- Lumbar Spine (Lower back): The standard diagnostic scan for sciatica, lower back pain, spinal stenosis, and lumbar herniated discs.

NO CONTRAST
Most joint and extremity scans are performed without contrast because the primary goal is to evaluate structural damage, such as fluid buildup, tendon tears, or bone fractures.
- MRI of the Knee: To check for meniscus tears, ACL/PCL injuries, and cartilage damage.
- MRI of the Shoulder: To evaluate rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and impingement syndrome.
- MRI of the Hip, Ankle, or Wrist: To assess ligaments, tendons, joint fluid, and occult (hidden) fractures.
Unless you had previous spinal surgery (where contrast is used to differentiate scar tissue from recurrent disc herniation) or is suspected of having a spinal infection or tumor, spine MRIs are almost always done without contrast.
- Cervical Spine (Neck): For neck pain, radiating arm pain, or suspected bulging discs.
- Thoracic Spine (Mid-back): To evaluate mid-back pain or trauma.
- Lumbar Spine (Lower back): The standard scan for sciatica, lower back pain, spinal stenosis, and herniated discs.
While contrast is often used in the brain to look for tumors, multiple sclerosis (active lesions), or infection, a standard brain MRI without contrast is highly effective for many other conditions.
- Routine Brain MRI: Used to evaluate chronic headaches, acute stroke, congenital abnormalities, or generalized age-related changes (like chronic microvascular ischemic disease).
WITH CONTRAST
- Brain MRI for Tumors/Cancer: To detect primary brain tumors, metastatic lesions, or to monitor the size of a known tumor.
- Brain MRI for Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Contrast highlights active demyelinating lesions (flare-ups) versus old, inactive scar tissue.
- Brain/Head MRI for Infection: To check for meningitis, encephalitis, or brain abscesses.
- Pituitary MRI: The pituitary gland is a tiny structure, and contrast is essential to spot microadenomas (small benign tumors).
- Post-Surgical Spine MRI: If a patient has had previous back surgery, contrast is absolutely required to tell the difference between post-surgical scar tissue and a new/recurrent herniated disc.
- Spine MRI for Infection/Tumors: To look for osteomyelitis (bone infection), discitis (disc infection), or spinal cord tumors.
- Liver MRI: Used to characterize liver lesions (distinguishing between benign hemangiomas and liver cancer).
- Kidney/Renal MRI: To evaluate solid masses or cysts on the kidneys.
- Breast MRI: Breast MRIs almost always require contrast. It is the gold standard for spotting the abnormal blood vessel growth associated with breast cancer.
- Prostate & Pelvic MRI: Used for staging prostate cancer, cervical cancer, or evaluating complex ovarian cysts and fibroids.
